Maclaren’s has issued a recall on every umbrella stroller it has sold over the past decade. The strollers passed federal safety inspections, but the stroller are being recalled because of Maclaren’s commitment to safety. This involves well over a million strollers.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission will look into further standards or recalls as needed for stroller hinges. Other stroller manufacturers have based their hinge design on the Maclaren design and have had safety reports, but have not had amputations that are attributed to the Maclaren design.
Regardless of the recall of strollers, or the safety of the hinges, it warns us to keep the children away when the equipment is being set up. We must keep our children under watch at all times. Surely in the past twenty years many children have not been hurt by these strollers.
As a new father, I thought I was prepared for the trials and tribulations associated with raising a child. For whatever reason, I had always suspected my friends were embellishing their stories about sleepless nights sitting up with the baby. Maybe my kid would be better behaved, I thought, but it was all to no avail. The first few months varied wildly from moments of wonder and bliss to pure torture.
My wife and I coped with the challenges together, and in time I even got used to changing diapers. We set up a baby changing table in the nursery, and it got to the point that no mess could surprise me – either in terms of size or aromatic potency. After those first few months, we had really found our stride as parents. I’m looking forward to the next few years with gusto. The kid is already growing up so fast that I’m trying to capture as many memories as possible.
If you had told me even 18 months ago that my wife would be giving birth to twins, I would have reacted with very mixed emotions. First would come shock and happiness at the prospect of welcoming two new members of the family into the world. But then the financial implications of the situation would begin to sink in. Now that the twins are a year old, we’re still struggling to make ends meet.
We’ve settled on several smart economic compromises, buying baby food in bulk and mostly dressing the children in hand-me-downs from their older cousins. I figure that by saving money now, we’ll be able to lavish them with nicer things once they’re old enough to appreciate it. For now, I’m content to push them around the neighborhood in twin strollers, enjoying their company even as I panic about ways to put them through college.
A concern for all parents is when they are ready to purchase baby furniture to make sure that the furniture will not be toxic to their baby or child. In some cases furniture is coated with chemicals to preserve and that makes it more likely that kids come into contact with poison.
Furniture made primarily of solid wood is best for kids. Composites like plywood and particleboard are made using glues that contain formaldehyde. As plywood and particleboard become worn the formaldehyde in the glue is slowly emitted in vapors.
